Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever Allah has given wealth to and he does not pay its zakat, then on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be turned into a bald snake, with two black spots over its eyes. It will seize its owner by the jaws and say, "I am your wealth, I am your treasure." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: {وَلَا یَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِیْنَ یَبْخَلُوْنَ بِمَا آتَاہُمُ اللّٰہُ مِنْ فَضْلِہٖ ھُوَ خَیْرًا لَّھُمْ بَلْ ھُوَ شَرٌّلَّھُمْ سُیُطَوَّقُوْنَ مَا بَخِلُوْا بِہٖ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ وَلِلّٰہِ مِیْرَاثُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضِ وَاللّٰہُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُوْنَ خَبِیْرٌ} (Surah Aal-e-Imran 180) — "And let not those who are miserly with what Allah has given them of His bounty think it is good for them; rather, it is bad for them. That which they were miserly with will be hung around their necks on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is well aware of what you do."
