It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to us, praised and glorified Allah as is His due, and then said: «أَمَّابَعْدُ» Verily, the truest word is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst matters are those that are newly invented, and every innovation is misguidance.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The religion which we follow was perfected during the blessed life of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Therefore, regarding every circumstance for which the Shari‘ah has already specified rulings, the people of faith should adhere strictly to those matters. For example, when a person passes away, from the moment of his death throes until his burial, all the rulings have been specified and nothing has been left incomplete. Now, Muslims should adhere to these prescribed matters: it has been commanded to sit by the deceased and supplicate for him, but not to recite (the Qur’an) in a specific manner. When the deceased is being taken towards the graveyard, it is not established to chant the testimony of faith (kalimah shahadah) aloud or to respond by saying “ashhadu…”. After the deceased has been buried, the command to supplicate for him is present, but acts such as giving the call to prayer (adhan) or reciting (the Qur’an) at the grave are not established.
Bid‘ah (innovation): That new matter which is introduced into the religion with the intention of earning reward, and for which there is no evidence from the Book (Qur’an) or the Sunnah. For example: delivering a sermon before the Eid prayer, making a point of shaking hands or embracing after prayer, gatherings for Mawlid (the Prophet’s birthday), ‘Urs (death anniversary of a saint), gatherings for the eleventh, the fortieth (after death), gatherings for elegy recitation, the ritual of “Qul”, the ritual of “Khatm”, and so on.
