Hadith 3311

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyidah Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with her) made this supplication: O Allah! Grant me the opportunity to benefit from my husband, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), my father Abu Sufyan, and my brother Mu'awiyah. But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: You have asked Allah for matters whose times and days have already been appointed, and their sustenance has already been distributed. Nothing can be advanced or delayed from its appointed time. If you had supplicated to Allah that He protect you from the punishment of the Fire and the grave, that would have been better and more virtuous for you.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … “Grant (me) the opportunity to benefit.” The meaning of this supplication is that these three personalities may be granted long life, so that Sayyidah Umm Habibah radi Allahu anha may continue to benefit from them. If the lifespan and sustenance of people have already been decreed, then the decree of punishment or salvation has also been written. Therefore, what is the wisdom in forbidding the former (i.e., asking for long life) and commanding the latter (i.e., asking for salvation from punishment)? The answer is that supplicating for salvation from the punishment of Hell or the grave is an act of worship, and in the Shari‘ah, only acts of worship have been commanded. Just as, regarding predestination (taqdeer), when it was said to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: Should we not rely upon our book and the decree that has been decided? He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: ((I‘malū fa kullun muyassarun limā khuliqa lahu.)) That is: “Act, for every person is facilitated for that for which he was created.” Whereas supplicating for long life is not an act of worship. Therefore, just as we cannot abandon fasting and prayer (ṣawm wa ṣalāh) by relying on predestination, similarly, the supplication for salvation from Hell cannot be abandoned either. And Allah knows best.
