عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: دَخَلَتْ عَلَيْهَا يَهُودِيَّةٌ اسْتَوْهَبَتْهَا طِيبًا، فَوَهَبَتْ لَهَا عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا، فَقَالَتْ: أَجَارَكِ اللَّهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، قَالَتْ: فَوَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِي مِنْ ذَلِكَ، حَتَّى جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَتْ: فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّ لِلْقَبْرِ عَذَابًا؟ قَالَ: ((نَعَمْ، إِنَّهُمْ لَيُعَذَّبُونَ فِي قُبُورِهِمْ عَذَابًا تَسْمَعُهُ الْبَهَائِمُ))
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: A Jewish woman came to me and asked for perfume. So when I gave her the perfume, she said: May Allah protect you from the punishment of the grave. This supplication caused doubt in my heart, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came. I told him about this and asked: O Messenger of Allah! Is there punishment in the grave? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, the dead are punished in their graves in such a way that animals hear its sound.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The common people should also understand an important point from this hadith: it is not necessary that every scholar possesses knowledge of every issue. See, for example, that Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha did not have knowledge of the punishment of the grave before this incident. However, she did not consider this state of uncertainty sufficient for herself, and, seeking clarification, she questioned the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In the same way, we too should investigate every issue through the Qur’an and Hadith.
