Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: A Jewish woman came to my door asking for food and said: May Allah protect you from the trial of Dajjal and the torment of the grave, give me food. I kept her waiting for quite a while until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived. I said: O Messenger of Allah! What is this Jewish woman saying? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is she saying? I said: She says, may Allah protect you from the trial of Dajjal and the torment of the grave. Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, spread his hands, and began seeking refuge with Allah from the trial of Dajjal and the torment of the grave. Then he said: The trial of Dajjal is such a trial that every prophet has warned his nation about it. I also warn you about it in such a way that no prophet has warned his nation as I have. (Listen!) He will be one-eyed, whereas Allah Almighty is not one-eyed, and between his eyes the word "disbeliever" will be written; every believer will read it. As for the trial of the grave, you will also be tested regarding me and you will be questioned about me. When a deceased person is righteous, he is made to sit in the grave in such a state that there are no signs of panic or distress upon him. He is asked: What religion were you upon? He says: I was upon Islam. Then he is asked: The person who was sent among you, who is he? He replies: He is the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he came to us with clear proofs from Allah and we affirmed him. After that, a window towards Hell is opened for him and he sees that parts of Hell are consuming each other. He is told: Look at what Allah has saved you from, look there. Then a window towards Paradise is opened for him, he sees the beauty and delights of Paradise and its other blessings, and he is told: This is your place in Paradise. The reality is that you lived in the world with certainty, died upon it, and, if Allah wills, you will be raised upon it. And if the deceased is evil, when he is made to sit in the grave, he is anxious and extremely frightened. He is asked: What religion were you upon in the world? He replies: I do not know anything. He is asked: The person who was sent among you, who is he? He says: I said what I heard people saying, (now I do not know anything). After that, a window towards Paradise is opened for him, he sees its beauty and its blessings, and he is told: Look at what Allah has turned away from you. Then a window towards Hell is opened for him, he sees that parts of it are consuming each other, and he is told: This is your place in Hell. The reality is that you were upon doubt, died upon it, and, if Allah wills, you will be raised upon it, then he is punished.
