Hadith 330

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ: ((مَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ بَعَثَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي أُمَّةٍ قَبْلِي إِلَّا كَانَ لَهُ مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ حَوَارِيُّونَ وَأَصْحَابٌ يَأْخُذُونَ بِسُنَّتِهِ وَيَقْتَدُونَ بِأَمْرِهِ، ثُمَّ إِنَّهَا تَخَلَّفَ مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ خُلَفٌ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا لَا يُؤْمَرُونَ))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Before me, whenever Allah Almighty sent any prophet to any community, there were disciples from among his community who acted upon his Sunnah and followed his commands. Then, after them, incompetent people succeeded them, who would say what they did not do, and would do what they were not commanded to do."
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … By "Hawariyyun" (disciples) is meant the sincere and chosen followers of the prophets, who fulfilled every requirement of obedience and compliance, support and assistance, striving (jihad), obedience to leaders and caliphs—in short, they fulfilled every demand of obedience to their respective prophets. This hadith also indicates that after the sincere and obedient followers of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, such unworthy people will also arise in this ummah; therefore, we should remain alert in this regard, lest we ourselves be among those whose words and actions are contradictory.
