Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)'s servant Hani says that when Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) would stand by a grave, he would weep so much that his beard would become wet. Someone said to him: You mention Paradise and Hell as well, but you do not weep as much at that time, and yet you weep so much when you see a grave? He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The grave is the first stage among the stages of the Hereafter; if a person is successful in it, then the subsequent stages will be easier for him, but if a person does not attain salvation from it, then the subsequent stages will be more difficult for him. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Allah! Whenever I have seen (the scenes of Allah's punishment), I have found the scene of the grave to be the most terrifying.
