Hadith 3284

Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that a daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to him that her son or daughter was near death, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) should come to them. But he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent greetings to them and (to console her) said: Surely, to Allah belongs what He takes and to Him belongs what He gives, and with Him everything has an appointed time, so (my daughter) she should be patient and hope for reward for it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … These are the best words for offering condolences and comforting the bereaved. In the narration of Bukhari and Muslim, the words of this supplication are as follows, and these are the ones commonly published in general books: "Indeed, to Allah belongs what He takes, and to Him belongs what He gives, and everything with Him has an appointed term." Furthermore, for comforting through supplication or otherwise, any permissible manner may be adopted. The virtue of offering condolences is as follows: Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm narrates that the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "No believer consoles his brother in a calamity except that Allah, the Exalted, will clothe him with garments of honor on the Day of Resurrection." (Ibn Majah: 1601, Sahihah: 195)
