Hadith 3271

(Third Chain) Abu Ali Thumama Hamdani narrates that he saw Sayyiduna Fadala bin Ubaid (may Allah be pleased with him) ordering that the graves of Muslims be leveled with the ground, so in the region of Rome, the graves of Muslims were leveled with the ground. Then he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: You should level your graves with the ground.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There is no doubt that the grave will be constructed raised above the ground and will not be made exactly level with the earth, so that it may remain protected and not be subjected to disrespect. Then what is to be made of the hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Fadala radi Allahu anhu and the inference he drew from it? There are various answers to this: (1) The statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam pertains to graves that are raised in an un-Islamic (ghayr shar‘i) manner, as has already been mentioned in the narration of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, but Sayyiduna Fadala radi Allahu anhu understood it in a general sense; and (2) it is also possible that the meaning of making the graves level with the ground is that they should be kept low in height.
