اخْتِيَارُ اللَّحْدِ عَلَى الشَّقِّ وَتَعْمِيقِ الْقَبْرِ وَتَوْسِيعِهِ وَدَفْنِ الْاثْنَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثَةِ فِي قَبْرٍ وَاحِدٍ إِذَا اقْتَضَى الْحَالُ ذَالِكَPreferring the niche grave over the trench, deepening and widening the grave, and burying two or three in one grave if necessary
Hadith 3253

عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: جَاءَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! أَصَابَنَا قَرْحٌ وَجَهْدٌ، فَكَيْفَ تَأْمُرُنَا؟ قَالَ: ((احْفِرُوا وَأَوْسِعُوا (زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ: وَأَعْمِقُوا) وَاجْعَلُوا الرَّجُلَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثَةَ فِي الْقَبْرِ))، قَالُوا: فَأَيُّهُمْ نُقَدِّمُ؟ قَالَ: ((أَكْثَرَهُمْ قُرْآنًا))، قَالَ: فَقُدِّمَ أَبِي عَامِرٍ بَيْنَ يَدَي رَجُلٍ أَوْ اثْنَيْنِ
Sayyiduna Hisham bin ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On the day of the Battle of Uhud, the Ansari Companions came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! We are very wounded and tired, (now regarding the burial of these martyrs) what do you command us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Dig graves and make them wide and deep, and bury two or three men in each grave. They asked: Whom should we put forward among them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one who knows more Qur’an. Hisham says: Thus, my father ‘Amir was placed ahead of one or two men.
