Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of this hadith is that for Muslims, the side niche (lahd) is superior, although the trench (shaqq) is also permissible, because in Madinah there were both a person who made lahd graves and a person who made shaqq graves, and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had kept both of them in place. And at the time of the burial of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the Companions consulted among themselves that whichever of the two arrived first, his method would be given preference for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Accordingly, the one who made the lahd arrived first, so a lahd was made for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Imam Nawawi said: The people of knowledge have consensus (ijma‘) that burying the deceased in both lahd and shaqq is permissible.
