Hadith 3249

Qutbah bin Malik says that when Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke some inappropriate words about Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to forbid speaking ill of the dead, so why do you speak ill of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when he has passed away?

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In this chapter and in several other hadiths on this subject, men have been prohibited from being reviled or spoken ill of, whereas in the previous chapter, some men were spoken ill of in the presence of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he remained silent. Imam Nawawi has presented the following reconciliation and harmonization for this apparent contradiction: The men whom the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade from being cursed are those who are not hypocrites, disbelievers, or openly engaged in sin or innovation (bid‘ah). Otherwise, mentioning the evil of such wicked people is permissible, so that others may refrain from following their example.
