Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah bin Rabi’i, may Allah be pleased with him, says that a funeral passed by the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said about it: “He has found relief, or others have found relief from him.” The companions asked: “O Messenger of Allah! What does it mean that he has found relief or others have found relief from him?” He, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: “A believer finds relief from the hardships and troubles of the world and goes to the mercy of Allah, and from a wicked person, other people, cities, trees, and animals find relief.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Whether anyone accepts it or not, it is a fact that by this testimony, it is absolutely not meant that elegies for the deceased should be recited with affectation, or that his qualities should be described in poetry and prose in various gatherings, and for this purpose, the services of certain singer-like and qawwal-type people should be sought, whose aim is to flatter and curry favor with the bereaved family. In these ahadith, the testimony mentioned is that which Allah, the Exalted, inspires into the hearts of His servants, and they speak out whether they wish to or not. Those who give this testimony are trustworthy, reliable, and possess understanding of the Shari‘ah; they, without being influenced by their own temperament or by society, mention the good or bad qualities of the deceased as they are. When they mention the bad, their intention is not to revile the dead, which is what is prohibited in the following ahadith.
