Hadith 3236

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), or from one of them, that a Jewish funeral passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said: "Its stench has caused me distress."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The reasons for standing for the funeral have already been mentioned in the previous chapter. From the hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu and the following narration, it is understood that standing for the deceased has been abrogated. This is also the opinion of Imam Malik, Imam Abu Hanifah, and Imam Shafi‘i rahimahumullah. Sayyiduna ‘Ubadah bin Samit radi Allahu anhu says: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to stand for the funeral until it was placed in the grave. One day, a Jewish scholar passed by the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said: “We also do the same.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam then sat down himself and also said: ((Ijlisu, khalifuhum.)) That is: “Sit down and oppose them.” (Abu Dawud: 3176)
