Hadith 3191

(Second Chain) It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she and the other wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to the heirs of Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) to bring the deceased to them in the mosque. Thus, the Mothers of the Believers performed his funeral prayer. People objected to this situation. When Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) learned of this, she said: Are you not amazed at those who object to this situation? By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the funeral prayer of Sayyiduna Sahl bin Bayda in the mosque itself.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The wording of a narration in Sahih Muslim is as follows: "By Allah! The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam offered the funeral prayer for the two sons of Bayda’ in the mosque." That is: By Allah! The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) for both sons of Bayda’ in the mosque. From these ahadith, it is established that placing the deceased in the mosque and performing the funeral prayer there is permissible. This is the position of Imam Shafi’i and Imam Ahmad. However, according to Imam Abu Hanifah and Imam Malik, performing the funeral prayer in the mosque is disliked (makruh), because in their view, the deceased is impure and filthy. But the aforementioned hadith refutes this opinion, and likewise, the view of considering the deceased as impure is also not correct.
