Hadith 3180

Ibrahim Hijri reports that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) led the funeral prayer for his daughter and said four takbirs, then stood for a while. When some of the followers said "Subhan Allah" to prompt him, he ended the prayer with salam and said: Did you think that I was going to say a fifth takbir? The people replied: Yes. Then he said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said the fourth takbir, he would remain standing for a while in that state, then when the bier was set down, he would sit down and we would also sit down with him.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Imam Ahmad rahimahullah did not encompass the narrations containing different numbers of takbirs. From all the narrations on this subject, it is understood that the minimum number of takbirs in the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) is four and the maximum is nine. In most ahadith, only four takbirs are mentioned. The evidences for four and five takbirs have already been mentioned above; the remaining numbers are established from the following marfu‘ and mawquf narrations. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Zubayr radi Allahu anhu says: The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam led the funeral prayer of Sayyiduna Hamzah radi Allahu anhu and said nine takbirs in it.
