Hadith 3173

(Second Chain) Imam Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: A man informed me who had passed by a solitary grave in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the companions in prayer and they formed rows behind him. Sulaiman Shaybani said: O Abu Amr! Who narrated this incident to you? He said: Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these ahadith it is established that the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) can be performed over a deceased who has already been buried, even if the funeral prayer had previously been performed for them. This is because, in the aforementioned cases, the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) performed the funeral prayer and only then buried those individuals. To stipulate specific restrictions in this regard is invalid, for example: that the funeral prayer may be performed up to the third day after burial, or up to one month, or as long as the body remains moist, or until the body has turned to dust. Similarly, to restrict this form of funeral prayer as being exclusive to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is also incorrect, because there is no evidence for such a particularization.
