Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah رضي الله عنه reports that during the time of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, a man passed away. A person came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم and said: O Messenger of Allah! So-and-so has died. But the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: He has not died. The man came again, and then a third time, and informed the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم of the same thing. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم asked: How did he die? He replied that he had slaughtered himself with a broad arrow. Upon hearing this, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم did not perform his funeral prayer. In another narration, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said: Then I will not perform his funeral prayer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … At the end of another narration in Sunan Ibn Majah (1526) and Musnad Ahmad (20883), the words of the narrator of the hadith are also reported: كُلُّذَالِکَأَدَبٌمِنْهُ. That is: The fact that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not perform the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) for this person was a disciplinary action, so that others may take heed and refrain from such an act. Committing suicide is forbidden (haram) and a major sin (kabirah), nevertheless, the general Muslims should perform his funeral prayer.
