Hadith 3155

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Muslim passed away in Khaybar. When this was mentioned before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "You yourselves should perform the funeral prayer of your companion." Upon hearing this, the faces of the Companions changed. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw their distress, he said: "Your companion has committed treachery in the way of Allah (by taking from the spoils of war)." Then we searched his belongings and found among them some pearls from the Jews, which were equal to two dirhams.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Without any doubt, Muslims should perform the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) for a traitor. The fact that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not perform this prayer himself was intended as a means of rebuke and admonition for the people, so that others would refrain from committing such a crime. In our society, acting upon this Sunnah would mean that the well-known and prominent scholars of the city should avoid participating in the funeral of such criminals. From this blessed hadith, traitorous people should take heed, for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, for just two dirhams…
