Hadith 3132

(Third Chain) There is a similar hadith, except that in it the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered regarding him that he should be washed with water and lote tree leaves and shrouded in two garments. Also, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not apply perfume to him and his head should also be uncovered. After that, Imam Shu’bah narrated this hadith as follows: His head or face should be uncovered, because he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection in such a state that his head will be smeared.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the time of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, some people entering the state of ihram (ritual consecration) would stick their hair down by applying something to their heads, so that the hair would stay in place and not become dusty. It is possible that this man had also stuck down his hair, which is why the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave this instruction in the hadith. The characteristics of a person who dies in the state of ihram are that he should be shrouded in only two garments, his head should not be covered, and no perfume should be applied to him. This is the opinion of Imam Ahmad and Imam Shafi’i rahimahumullah. However, Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah is of the view that the deceased should be treated like any other dead person. In light of this blessed hadith, the first-mentioned opinion is the stronger one.
