Hadith 3093

Sayyidah Umm ‘Atiyyah Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No woman should observe mourning for any deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom she will observe mourning for four months and ten days. During this period, she should not wear dyed clothes, but she may wear clothes made of dyed yarn. She should not apply kohl, nor use perfume, except that when she becomes pure after menstruation, she may use a little qust or azfar perfume.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the narration of Sunan Abu Dawood and Sunan Nasa’i, there is the additional wording ((وَلَاتَخْتَضِبْ)) (and she should not apply henna), and in the narration of Sunan Nasa’i, ((وَلَا تَمْتَشِطْ)) (and she should not comb her hair) is also added. In this hadith, the rulings regarding a woman observing mourning (iddah) have been mentioned. “However, she may wear a garment made of dyed thread.” This refers to a garment that is woven from already colored threads. Nowadays, women generally do not observe these conditions at all, whereas from the following hadith, one can gauge the strictness regarding this matter.
