Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him), who was among the Companions who pledged allegiance at Ridwan, his daughter passed away. He was riding a mule behind the funeral procession, when the women began to weep. He said: Do not recite elegies, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade elegies. However, you may shed as many tears as you wish. Then he said four takbirs in the funeral prayer, and after the fourth takbir, he stood for as long as the interval between two takbirs and continued to supplicate. Then he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the funeral prayer in this manner as well.
