Muhammad bin Amr says: I was sitting in the market with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Salamah bin Azraq was also present beside him. A funeral passed by, and the people with it were weeping. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If these relatives of the deceased would stop weeping, it would be better for the deceased. Salamah bin Azraq said: Abu Abdur Rahman! Are you saying this? He replied: Yes, I am saying it. Salamah bin Azraq said: I heard from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), when someone from the family of Marwan passed away, women gathered and began to weep. Marwan said: Abdul Malik! Get up and go forbid these women from weeping. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Let them weep. A relative of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, and women gathered and began to weep over him. Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) got up to stop and scold them, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ibn Khattab, leave them; the eyes are shedding tears, the heart is grieved, and the time of calamity is near. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did you yourself hear this hadith from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: Yes. He asked: Did he narrate it from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes. Upon hearing this, he said: Allah and His Messenger know best.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … “When it becomes obligatory,” what is meant by this is death, as is understood from the marfu‘ narration in Sunan and Muwatta. Interpreting its meaning as burial is the personal understanding of the narrator, which is not correct. No one should weep after death has occurred; it is evident in light of other narrations that what is meant here is the prohibited type of weeping, in which there is wailing or loud crying, because weeping itself is actually established from the actions of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and in fact, it has been described as a mercy and praised.
