Hadith 3078

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) wept at the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O dear father! How close you have become to your Lord. O dear father! I am informing Jibreel of your passing. O dear father! Jannat al-Firdaws is your abode.

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I went with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to an Ansari man who was near death, and his family were weeping. I said: Are you weeping in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Leave them, as long as this man is with them, let them weep. When it becomes obligatory, then they should not weep.

Jabir says: I narrated this hadith to Umar bin Humaid Qurashi, and he asked: What is the meaning of “when it becomes obligatory”? He said: When he is placed in the grave.
