Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates the incident of the death of the son of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came there and called for the child, then held him close to his chest. I saw that he was in the throes of death at that time, and the eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) filled with tears. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, but we will only say that which will please our Lord. O Ibrahim! By Allah, we are certainly grieved because of your departure.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The wording of this narration in Sahih Bukhari is as follows: (When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam saw Sayyiduna Ibrahim radi Allahu anhu in the throes of death and began to weep,) Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf radi Allahu anhu said: “O Messenger of Allah! You are also weeping?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “O Ibn Awf! This is mercy.” Then the tears of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam flowed even more. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah said: In this very hadith of Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf radi Allahu anhu, these words also occur: I said, “O Messenger of Allah! You are weeping, did you not forbid weeping?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “I have only forbidden two kinds of evil and foolish sounds: (1) the sound of wailing, which is amusement, play, and the flute of Shaytan, and (2) the sound at the time of calamity, that is, scratching the face, tearing the collar, and the sound of Shaytan (i.e., screaming and wailing). As for my weeping, it is mercy, and whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.” (Fath al-Bari: 3/224)
