Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When the news of the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Ja'far bin Abi Talib, Sayyiduna Zaid bin Harithah, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down and signs of grief were apparent on his face. I was watching through a hole in the door when a man came and said: O Messenger of Allah! The women of Ja'far's family are weeping. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told him to stop them. He went and then came back and said: I did stop them, but they did not listen to me. The same happened a third time. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then put dust in their mouths. I said: May your nose be covered with dust! By Allah, neither did you do what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded you, nor did you leave him alone.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … These three Companions were martyred in the Battle of Mu'tah, which took place in the eighth year of Hijrah. The statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: “Then put dust in their mouths,” means to emphatically reject and prohibit the act of weeping. The meaning of the statement of Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha at the end of the blessed hadith is that this man should have, in accordance with the command of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, prevented the women from weeping; otherwise, he should have remained silent and not caused further distress to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
