Sayyida Umm Atiyya (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When this verse was revealed: { ٰٓیاَیُّھَاالنَّبِیُّاِذَاجَآئَکَالْمُؤْمِنٰتُیُبَایِعْنَکَعَلٰٓیاَنْلَّایُشْرِکْنَبِاللّٰہِشَیْئًاوَّلَایَسْرِقْنَوَلَایَزْنِیْنَوَلَایَقْتُلْنَاَوْلَادَھُنَّوَلَایَاْتِیْنَبِبُھْتَانٍیَّفْتَرِیْنَہٗبَیْنَاَیْدِیْھِنَّوَاَرْجُلِھِنَّوَلَایَعْصِیْنَکَفِیْمَعْرُوْفٍ} (Surah Al-Mumtahina: 12), that is: O Prophet! When believing women come to you to pledge that they will not associate anything with Allah, will not steal, will not commit adultery, will not kill their children, will not bring a false charge, and will not disobey you in what is right—among these right things was also refraining from wailing (lamentation for the dead). I said: O Messenger of Allah! Such-and-such family supported me in wailing during the time of ignorance. Now it is necessary for me to support them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Alright) except for such-and-such family.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In this hadith, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam specifically granted permission to Sayyidah Umm ‘Atiyyah radi Allahu anha to perform lamentation (nawh), while the Lawgiver has the right to make exceptions from a general ruling. Therefore, apart from this concession given to Sayyidah Umm ‘Atiyyah radi Allahu anha, performing lamentation (nawh) is prohibited.
