Hadith 3048

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, returned from Uhud, he heard the voices of the Ansari women who were weeping over the martyrdom of their husbands. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: But Hamza, there are no women to weep for him. When this news reached the Ansari women, they came and began to weep over Sayyiduna Hamza, may Allah be pleased with him. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, woke up at night and heard them weeping, he said: Woe to them, they have been weeping since the night; tell them to return, and after today, no one should weep over any deceased person.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The word "wayh" is sometimes used to denote mercy and sometimes punishment; the context determines its meaning. From this hadith, it is clearly evident that in the beginning, this type of weeping was permissible, but later the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade it.
