عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ ثَنَا صَفْوَانُ حَدَّثَنِي الْمَشِيخَةُ، أَنَّهُمْ حَضَرُوا غُضَيْفَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ الثُّمَالِيَّ حِينَ اشْتَدَّ سَوْقُهُ، فَقَالَ: هَلْ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ يَقْرَأُ يَسْ؟ قَالَ: فَقَرَأَهَا صَالِحُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ السَّكُونِيُّ، فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ مِنْهَا قُبِضَ، قَالَ: فَكَانَ الْمَشِيخَةُ يَقُولُونَ إِذَا قُرِئَتْ عِنْدَ الْمَيِّتِ خُفِّفَ عَنْهُ بِهَا، قَالَ صُفْوَانُ وَقَرَأَهَا عِيسَى بْنُ الْمُعْتَمِرِ عِنْدَ ابْنِ مَعْبَدٍ
Safwan says: The elders narrated to me that they went to Ghudhayf bin Harith Thamali, while he was in the throes of death and the extraction of the soul was severe. A man said: Is there anyone among you who can recite Surah Ya-Sin? In response, Salih bin Shurayh Sukuni recited Surah Ya-Sin, and he had only reached the fortieth verse when his soul was taken. That is why the people of knowledge used to say that when this Surah is recited over someone near death, it brings ease to him because of it. Safwan says that Isa bin Mu'tamir had recited it over Ibn Ma'bad.
