Hadith 2997

Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Who is the best person among the people? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: The one whose life is long and whose deeds are good. He then asked: Who is the worst person among the people? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: The one whose life is long and whose deeds are bad.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From the following blessed hadith, one can estimate the value of a long life.

From Talhah ibn Ubaydullah: That two men from Bali, which is a clan of Quda‘ah, one of them was martyred in the path of Allah, and the other was kept alive for a year after him, then he died. Talhah said: I saw in a dream that Paradise was opened, and I saw that the latter of the two men entered Paradise before the first. I was astonished. When morning came, I mentioned this, and the matter reached the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to me: “Did he not fast Ramadan after him, and did he not perform after him six thousand units (rak‘ahs) of prayer, and such and such additional units of voluntary prayer?” (Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in “al-Zuhd”: 73/2, and Ibn Majah: 3925, and Ibn Hibban: 2466 with similar wording, but more complete. Likewise narrated by Ahmad: 1/161, 163, al-Sahihah: 2591)

“Talhah ibn Ubaydullah (radi Allahu anhu) says that there were two men from the Bali tribe of Quda‘ah; one of them was martyred and the other passed away a year after him. Talhah (radi Allahu anhu) says: I saw in a dream that the gate of Paradise was opened and the one who died later entered Paradise before the one who was martyred. I was greatly surprised. When morning came, I mentioned this dream, and the matter reached the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘Did he not fast the Ramadan after him (the one martyred a year earlier), and did he not perform six thousand units of obligatory prayer in a year and so many additional units of voluntary prayer?’”
