Abu Nazar Hayan says: I went with Sayyiduna Wathila bin Asqa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) to visit Abu Aswad Jarshi, who was suffering from the illness of death. Wathila greeted him with salam and sat down there. Abu Aswad took Wathila’s right hand and passed it over his eyes and face, because he had pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with that hand. Sayyiduna Wathila (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I want to ask you something. He said: What is it? He asked: What is your opinion about Allah? Abu Aswad indicated with his head that he had a good opinion. Wathila (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Rejoice, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Allah said: I deal with My servant according to his opinion of Me, so let him think of Me as he wishes (good or bad).
