Salih bin Khawwat narrates from a companion who performed the prayer of fear with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Dhat al-Riqa’. He narrated that one group formed a row with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while the other group remained facing the enemy. Those who were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he led them in one rak’ah, then he stood for such a duration that those people completed the second rak’ah by themselves, then they left and stood facing the enemy. The other group came and they performed the remaining rak’ah with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then he sat for such a duration that these people completed their second rak’ah (and sat in tashahhud), then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave salam. Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Of all the forms of the prayer of fear that I have heard, this method is the most preferable to me.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Truly, this is a very interesting situation, which indicates our Islam’s sense of opportunity. The first group, after completing the second rak‘ah, will finish the tashahhud and salam and then depart, as is stated in the wording of the narration of Abu Dawud: “And they completed for themselves the remaining rak‘ah, then gave salam and departed, while the Imam (the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) remained standing.” That is: they performed the second rak‘ah, gave salam, and then left, while the Imam (the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) remained standing. The second group will give salam along with the Imam, and the Imam will wait for their salam, as is understood from one version of the next hadith. It is also correct to deduce from this hadith that when men and women are performing prayer in a mosque consisting of different levels, and due to the speaker being turned off, the connection of the followers with the Imam is completely severed, then in such a situation, those followers should exit the following of the Imam and complete the remainder of their prayer themselves, just as the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) did in the second rak‘ah in this situation.
