Hadith 296

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: Whatever I used to hear from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I would write it down with the intention of remembering it. But the Quraysh forbade me from doing so and said: "You write down everything you hear from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while he is a human being and speaks in both states of anger and happiness." So I stopped writing and informed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You write! By the One in whose hand is my soul, nothing comes from me except the truth."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Hafiz Ibn Qayyim said in Tahdhib Mukhtasar Sunan Abi Dawud: 5/245: The prohibition of writing hadith by the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and his granting of permission for it—both are established. However, the hadiths granting permission are abrogating (nasikh). The reason for this is that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah, said: “Write (my sermon) for Abu Shah.” And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave permission to our master Abdullah ibn Amr radi Allahu anhu to write, and this incident of permission occurred after the hadith of prohibition, because Abdullah ibn Amr radi Allahu anhu continued writing hadith until, when he passed away, he had with him his book containing the Prophetic hadith, which is called Sahifah Sadiqah. If the hadiths of prohibition had been later, then Abdullah radi Allahu anhu would have erased those hadiths, because the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had ordered that everything besides the Qur’an be erased. Thus, it is known that since he did not erase the written hadith, but rather preserved them, it shows that the incident of granting permission to write occurred later. This matter is absolutely clear, and all praise is due to Allah.
