Hadith 2914

Mujalid says: At the time of Duha, the sun was eclipsed and its darkness became intense. Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and led the people in prayer. He stood for as long as it takes to recite a surah from the Mathani, then bowed for about the same duration, then raised his head (stood up) and again bowed for about the same duration, then raised his head, stood for about the same duration, then again bowed for about the same duration. Meanwhile, the sun became clear. Then he prostrated and stood up (for the second rak’ah), stood for as long as it takes to recite a surah, then bowed and prostrated. After completing the prayer, he ascended the pulpit and said: Indeed, on the day the son of the Messenger, Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him), passed away, the sun was eclipsed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said: Indeed, the sun and the moon do not lose their light due to anyone’s death; they are two signs among the signs of Allah. So when either of them loses its light, seek refuge in prayer. Then he descended from the pulpit and narrated that indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) blew in front of himself during this prayer and then extended his hand forward, as if he was grasping something. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: Indeed, the fire was brought so close to me that I blew to repel its heat from my face, and I saw in it the man with the staff, the one who invented Bahira, and the woman from the tribe of Himyar who had a cat.
