عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ أَنْبَأَنَا عَطَاءٌ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ أَنْ لَا يَغْدُوَ أَحَدُكُمْ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ حَتَّى يَطْعَمَ فَلْيَفْعَلْ، قَالَ: فَلَمْ أَدَعْ أَنْ آكُلَ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَغْدُوَا مُنْذُ سَمِعْتُ ذَلِكَ مِنَ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَآكُلُ مِنْ طَرَفِ الصَّرِيقَةِ الْأُكْلَةَ أَوْ أَشْرَبُ اللَّبَنَ أَوِ الْمَاءَ، قُلْتُ: فَعَلَامَ يُؤَوَّلُ هَٰذَا؟ قَالَ: سَمِعَهُ أَظُنُّ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: كَانُوا لَا يَخْرُجُونَ حَتَّى يَمْتَدَّ الضُّحَى فَيَقُولُونَ نَطْعَمُ لِئَلَّا نَعْجَلَ عَنْ صَلَاتِنَا
Ata says: I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: If you have the ability, then on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, go after eating something. Since I heard this from him, I have not abandoned eating before going in the morning; whether it was a morsel of bread, or he would drink milk or water. Ibn Jurayj asked Ata: What is the interpretation of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas’s (may Allah be pleased with him) statement? He said: My opinion is that he must have heard it from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He would not go out until the light had become long, that is, until the day had fully risen, and he used to say that he ate so that there would be no need to hurry for the prayer.
