Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would deliver the sermon on Friday, he would lean his back against a piece of wood, but when the people increased in number, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Prepare a pulpit for me. His (peace and blessings be upon him) intention was that he could make his words heard to them. So the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) prepared a pulpit with two steps for him (peace and blessings be upon him), then he (peace and blessings be upon him) moved to this wooden pulpit. Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) informed that he heard a sound like the crying of someone extremely saddened from (that first) piece of wood; it kept crying continuously until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) descended from the pulpit, went to it, and embraced it, so it became silent.
