Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Join your rows, bring them close together, and align your necks (in a straight line). By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad! Indeed, I see the devils slipping into the gaps between the rows just as if they were black sheep without hair.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of “bring them close together” is that the distance between two rows should be according to necessity; one row should not be too far from the other. “Hazaf”: small black sheep that have neither hair, nor tail, nor ears. When in some mosques such ahadith are mentioned that devils enter into the gaps of the rows, some people begin to say, “How can devils enter the mosque?” To such people, it is submitted that when the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) were praying in the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid Nabawi) behind the leadership of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), even then, if there remained a gap, the devil would reach it. Upon seeing this, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) prescribed this remedy: that there should be no gap or opening between two followers in the row.
