Hadith 2624

(Second chain of narration) Aswad and Alqamah were both in the house of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). He asked: Have those people performed the prayer? They replied: Yes. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) led them in prayer without adhan or iqamah, and he stood between them and said: When you are three people, do like this, and when you are more, then one of you should lead (and stand ahead). When someone bows for ruku', he should place his hands between his thighs and bow for ruku'. Even now, it is as if I am looking at the difference in the fingers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … During bowing (ruku‘), intertwining the fingers of both hands and placing the hands between the knees is called “tatbīq.” This act was Sunnah in the beginning, but later it was abrogated, and according to the new ruling, placing the hands on the knees during ruku‘ was declared Sunnah. The evidence for this claim is the following hadith: Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu anhu says: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam taught us prayer; he said “Allahu Akbar” and raised his hands, then he bowed (performed ruku‘) and did tatbīq with his hands and placed them between his knees. When Sayyiduna Sa‘d radi Allahu anhu came to know of this, he said: My brother ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud has spoken the truth; we used to do this act, but later we were commanded to hold the knees.
