Hadith 2604

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) would first perform the 'Isha prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then he would go to his people and lead them in the 'Isha prayer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Sayyiduna Mu'adh radi Allahu anhu used to perform the 'Isha prayer in the leadership (iqtida) of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, then he would go and lead his own people in the same prayer. From this hadith, it is necessarily established that it is permissible for someone performing an obligatory prayer to follow an imam who is performing a voluntary (nafl) prayer; that is, in such cases, there can be a difference in the intentions of the imam and the follower. From other authentic ahadith, it is also established that it is valid for someone performing a voluntary prayer to follow an imam who is performing an obligatory prayer. Similarly, a traveler (musafir) and a resident (muqim) can also lead and follow each other in prayer; when a traveler follows a resident imam, he will perform the full prayer, as is clarified in hadith number (1213) and (1217).
