Hadith 2554

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) used to pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then return from there and lead us in prayer. In another narration, it is mentioned: then he would return and lead his people in prayer. One night, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the 'Isha prayer. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed with him (as was his usual practice), then went to his people and began reciting Surah al-Baqarah in the prayer. (Due to this lengthy standing,) a man separated himself and prayed alone. It was said to him: O so-and-so! You have become a hypocrite. But he said: I have not become a hypocrite. Then he went to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) prays with you, then returns from here and leads us in prayer. We are people with camels and work with our own hands, but when Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) leads us in prayer, he begins reciting Surah al-Baqarah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Mu'adh! Are you a cause of tribulation? Do you want to put people to trial? Recite such-and-such surahs. Abu Zubair (while narrating the hadith) says: So recite Surah al-A'la and Surah al-Layl. Then we mentioned this to 'Amr ibn Dinar, and he said that I think Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) had mentioned this.
