Hadith 255

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: "Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) left us in such a state that even if a bird moved its wings (to fly), we would gain some knowledge from it."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Its meaning is that the knowledge of all the rulings and issues of the Shari‘ah had been acquired, or that the rulings regarding the permissibility and prohibition of every bird, the rulings concerning the slaughter (dhabh) of lawful birds, and other related legal rulings had been explained. This hadith does not mean that the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) had learned the practice of taking omens from birds, which was a custom of the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah).

Another possible meaning is that by observing the flight of birds, one understands the power of Allah, and one’s recognition (ma‘rifah) of Allah increases. As Allah Almighty has drawn attention to this sign of His power in Surah al-Mulk (Ayah: 19). (Abdullah Rafiq)
