Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Ghailan bin Abu Ghailan al-Dimashqi was the first Qadari. His home was in Damascus. Umar bin Abdul Aziz reprimanded him because of his belief in Qadar (divine decree), so he refrained from this belief. However, when Umar bin Abdul Aziz passed away, Ghailan began to propagate his belief again. He started issuing legal verdicts (fatwas) to people regularly, and in the year 116 AH, he performed Hajj with Hisham bin Abdul Malik. Imam Awza’i says: During the caliphate of Hisham bin Abdul Malik, Ghailan the Qadari came to us and began to speak on the subject of Qadar (divine decree). He was a blunt-spoken person. As a result, people criticized him and made Hisham angry with him. Consequently, Hisham ordered that his hands and feet be cut off, that he be killed, and that his body be hung on a crucifix.
