Hadith 228

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out one day and the people were discussing the topic of destiny (qadar). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became so angry that it seemed as if a pomegranate seed had burst on his face (i.e., his face turned red with anger). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is wrong with you? You are striking one part of Allah’s Book against another. It was for this very reason that the people before you were destroyed." Sayyiduna Abdullah said: Never did I feel so much envy for missing a gathering in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was present as I did for this gathering, wishing that I had not been present (so that I would not have become the subject of the Prophet’s anger).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The various forms of incorrect views regarding predestination (qadar) are as follows: If the occurrence or non-occurrence of all things is related to predestination, then what is the point of reward and punishment? The question arises: one group is in Paradise and another group is in Hell—what is the wisdom behind this? The answer given is: Allah Ta‘ala has granted everyone choice and power. But it is asked: Who granted them this power and choice, and the ability to do good or evil? Whatever has been decreed in predestination, the servant is compelled to act accordingly; he has no authority over his own likes or dislikes. Some people say that if they are committing evil deeds, then this is Allah Ta‘ala’s decision regarding them—what fault is theirs in this? The servants themselves are the creators of their actions, and all matters are being arranged anew; there is no system of divine decree and predestination (qada wa qadar).
