Hadith 2232

Saeed bin Jubair says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to perform voluntary prayers on his mount, but when he intended to perform the Witr prayer, he would dismount and perform Witr on the ground.

Hadith Takhrij «اسناده صحيح علي شرط الشيخين۔ أخرجه الطحاوي في شرح معاني الآثار : 1/429 ، (انظر مسند أحمد ترقيم الرسالة: 4476 ترقیم بيت الأفكار الدولية: 4476»
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There is no doubt whatsoever that performing the Witr prayer on a riding animal is permissible. In the previous hadith, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu encouraged Sa'id bin Yasar to act upon this Sunnah. It is a separate matter that if someone wishes to dismount from their riding animal and perform the Witr prayer, this is also undoubtedly permissible.

Some additional rulings related to the Witr prayer:

(1) Qunoot of Witr: "Allahumma ihdini feeman hadayta, wa 'afini feeman 'afayta, wa tawallani feeman tawallayta, wa barik li fima a'tayta, wa qini sharra ma qadayta, innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk, wa innahu la yadhillu man walayta wa la ya'izzu man 'adayta, tabarakta Rabbana wa ta'alayta." (Abu Dawood: 1425)
Translation: O Allah! Guide me among those whom You have guided, and grant me well-being among those whom You have granted well-being, and befriend me among those whom You have befriended, and bless for me what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Surely, You alone decree and none can decree against You. And the one whom You befriend can never be humiliated, and the one whom You oppose can never be honored. O our Lord! You are exceedingly blessed and exalted.

(2) To consider the commonly recited supplication "Allahumma inna nasta'eenuka…" as the Qunoot of Witr is not established from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. However, it is established from Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu that he would recite this supplication in Qunoot Nazilah.

(3) In the last rak'ah of Witr, the supplication of Qunoot of Witr should be recited before bowing (ruku').
(Nasa'i: 1700, Ibn Majah: 1182)
Reciting the Qunoot of Witr after bowing (ruku') is also permissible and valid. Indeed, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam instructed Hasan bin Ali to recite the Qunoot of Witr after bowing. The author of Mustadrak Hakim and Nayl al-Awtar rahimahullah has also considered the hadith of Mustadrak Hakim as authoritative.
