Hadith 2227

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he was asked about Witr, he would say: As far as I am concerned, if I perform Witr before sleeping, but then intend to pray at night, I perform one rak‘ah to make the previous Witr even, then I continue to pray two rak‘ahs at a time, and when I have completed the desired prayers, I perform one Witr at the end, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that Witr should be made the last prayer of the night.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This is the personal practice and reasoning of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu, even though the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade performing witr twice in one night. The majority of scholars are of the opinion that after sleep or similar interruptions, one cannot join a single rak‘ah to another rak‘ah in this manner. They say that the ruling given in this hadith should be understood as recommended (mustahabb), and in light of other evidences, allowance should be made for performing prayers after the witr prayer as well, and the repetition of witr or the act of making it even (i.e., adding another rak‘ah to it) should not be repeated.
