Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray in the chamber and I would be in the house. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) would separate the two and one rak'ah of Witr by saying salam, he would make us hear that salam.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This is also one method of performing the three rak‘ahs of the Witr prayer: after two rak‘ahs, one should end with salam, then perform the third rak‘ah separately. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu used to end with salam between the two and the one rak‘ah of Witr, and would even give instructions regarding some of his needs. (Bukhari: 991) Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, and Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhum used to end with salam between the two rak‘ahs and the one rak‘ah.
