Hadith 2208

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْتَرَ بِثَلَاثٍ بِـ {سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى} وَ{قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ} وَ{قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ}
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed three Witr and recited Surah Al-A'la, Surah Al-Kafiroon, and Surah Al-Ikhlas in them.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The apparent meaning of these ahadith is that three witr were performed together. In any case, it is established from some Companions that they would perform three rak‘ahs of the witr prayer with one salam, without a middle tashahhud. However, along with this, the following hadith is also worthy of consideration: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: Do not perform three witr (in such a way), rather perform five or seven witr, and (by performing three) do not make it resemble Maghrib. (Darqutni: 2/24, Bayhaqi: 3/31, Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar: 1/292) Which method should be adopted so that the three rak‘ahs of witr prayer do not resemble Maghrib in any way? Hafiz Ibn Hajar has said in Fath al-Bari that when three witr are performed consecutively without a middle tashahhud, then the resemblance to Maghrib is eliminated, and if the method mentioned in the coming third chapter is adopted, that is, the three rak‘ahs of witr prayer are performed with two salams, then the suspicion of resemblance does not remain.
