Hadith 2205

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: Tonight I will definitely watch the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. So I made his doorstep or the tent my pillow and began to watch. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed two light rak‘ahs, then performed two long rak‘ahs, then performed two rak‘ahs, but they were less than the previous ones, then performed two rak‘ahs, but they were less than the previous two, then performed two rak‘ahs, these were also less than the two before them, then performed witr. In this way, these became a total of thirteen rak‘ahs.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The wording of the hadith "then he performed witr" does not make clear how many units (rak‘ahs) of witr were performed; however, by counting the total number of rak‘ahs, the number thirteen is mentioned, which means that three rak‘ahs of witr were performed, because apart from witr, ten rak‘ahs are mentioned in this hadith.

From this chapter, it is established that performing one rak‘ah of the witr prayer is also valid. On this subject, the following hadith is the clearest: Abu Majliz says: "Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari radi Allahu anhu led his companions in prayer while he was traveling from Makkah to Madinah. He performed two rak‘ahs of the ‘Isha prayer, then stood up and recited one hundred verses from Surah al-Nisa’ in one rak‘ah. When the people objected to this, he said: 'I have not failed to place my foot where the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam placed his foot, nor to do as the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did.'" (al-Nasa’i: 3/243, Musnad Ahmad: 19998)

In the last sentence, the intensity of the obedience of Sayyiduna Abu Musa radi Allahu anhu to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is expressed with emphasis. His intention is that this action is not the result of his personal reasoning (ijtihad), but rather, in this matter, he has followed the example of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

From this hadith, it is established that performing only one rak‘ah of witr, without offering any supererogatory (nafl) prayer before it, is also valid.
