Hadith 2191

It is narrated from Abu Nahik that Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) used to deliver sermons to the people. One day he said that whoever reaches the morning, there is no Witr for him. Upon hearing this, some people went to Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and informed her of this statement, but she replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform Witr even after the morning had come.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of the statement that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would perform the witr prayer even after dawn had broken is that if, due to some excuse, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was unable to perform the witr prayer before the rising of Fajr, he would perform it afterwards. Imam Malik has narrated in al-Muwatta: 1/126 several reports from the Companions regarding performing witr after the rising of Fajr, and then said: The person who will perform witr after the rising of Fajr is the one who fell asleep; otherwise, it is not permissible for anyone to deliberately delay the performance of the witr prayer until Fajr has risen.

The same issue is clarified in the mentioned hadith:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (radi Allahu anhu) that the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever sleeps through the witr prayer or forgets it, let him perform witr when he remembers or when he wakes up.” (Musnad Ahmad: 11264, Abu Dawud: 1431, Tirmidhi: 465, Ibn Majah: 1188) It is thus understood that whoever deliberately does not perform witr before the rising of Fajr, there will remain no way for him to make up this prayer, and in this way, he will be deprived of the witr prayer for that night.
