Hadith 2181

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes perform Witr in the early part of the night, sometimes in the middle part, and at times in the last part of the night. Later on, the Witr of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would be in the last part of the night only.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This hadith is also found in other places in Musnad Ahmad, in which the last sentence appears with these words: "fa intaha witruhu ila al-sahar" or "wa intaha witruhu ila akhir al-layl," meaning that the time of the Prophet's (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performance of the witr prayer would reach until sahar (pre-dawn) or until the last part of the night.
